How much is too much to spend on a birthday?

When you get older, you should take every opportunity you get to celebrate with the people you love. Time is precious, and if you have reasons to celebrate, you should. You can't wait until the perfect time, because there is no perfect time. There is only the time you get. So if you want to go all out for your birthday, and it fits within your budget, then go for it. But what if you're in a partnership, and the other person isn't as all-in as you are? That's what happened here, when a husband was uncomfortable with his wife's birthday plans and wanted to stop her from doing them. He shared his story on the AITAH subreddit, and commenters took him to task for his response. As a rule, we should try not to dim each other's sparkle. Especially the people whom we love. We should be celebrating them and honoring their wishes and making them feel important, not making them feel like their needs are too much. Nobody wants to feel like they're too much. Everyone deserves to do what they'd like to do, especially for their birthday. And if it's not out of the budget, like it wasn't in this story, then those desires should be respected. If it's your 56th birthday and you want to go to a restaurant with a mariachi show, then you should get to do that. If your husband objects, then that's his problem.
